Stokenham Area Primary School

Outline Planning for the Summer Term  - Year 1 -  2026

Welcome to the Summer Term within Year 1!

Maths

This term in Maths we will be looking at numbers from 0-20, recognising coins and describing the position and direction of an object.

We will also be exploring numbers to 100, measuring items using cubes and a ruler as well as telling the time using o' clock and half past.

English

In English we will continue to improve the children’s punctuation, sentence structure and handwriting skills.

This term we will be looking at four different texts. These include: 'Beegu', 'Lubna and Pebble', 'Stella and the Seagull' and 'The Sea Saw'.

These texts will allow us to explore new and interesting vocabulary as well as different authors and illustrators.

We will continue to complete a spelling test every Friday. There will also be frequent reading practice sessions so please ensure that your child is reading every night to help develop their confidence, fluency and understanding of the book.

Science

The children will be looking at two topics. In Summer 1 we will be studying ‘Animals; and in Summer 2 ‘Humans”.

Animals

We will:

•Identify and name a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

•Identify and name a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.

•Describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, including pets).

Humans

We will:

•Identify, name, draw and label the basic parts of the human body and say which part of the body is associated with each sense.

Foundation Subjects:

Geography

The children will be looking at ‘There you are’.. Throughout this unit of work the children will be:

  • naming and locate the world’s seven continents
  • Locate key features of a globe
  • Describing urban and rural areas
  • Identifying urban and rural areas

History

The children will be looking at ‘Homes through time’. We will be focusing on:

  • Homes from the past and how they were made
  • Features of different houses.
  • Homes from our local community
  • Materials used for houses today

Art

The children will be making a 3D bird. They will be creating observational drawings of birds, drawing feathers using different lines and making 3D forms using paper. They will also be using wire and other materials to create a 3D sculpture of a bird.

Design Technology.

We will be looking at textiles. The children will be making and joining templates. They will understand how simple 3-D textile products are made, using a template to create two identical shapes. They will understand how to join fabrics using different techniques e.g. running stitch, glue, over stitch, stapling. They will explore different finishing techniques e.g. using painting, fabric crayons, stitching, sequins, buttons and ribbons.

Computing

During the first half term we will be looking at digital writing. The children will develop their understanding of the various aspects of using a computer to create and manipulate text. They will become more familiar with using a keyboard and mouse to enter and remove text. The children will also consider how to change the look of their text, and will be able to justify their reasoning in making these changes. Finally, learners will consider the differences between using a computer to create text, and writing text on paper. They will be able to explain which method they prefer and explain their reasoning for choosing this.

In the second half of term, we will be looking at programming animations. The children will be introduced to on-screen programming through ScratchJr. Learners will explore the way a project looks by investigating sprites and backgrounds. They will use programming blocks to use, modify, and create programs. The children will also be introduced to the early stages of program design through the introduction of algorithms.

RE

This term in RE we will begin by finding out about what it means to belong to a faith community. We will encounter artefacts, places of worship and symbols and consider where they belong and the communities to which they are a part of. We will then look at ‘How should we care for the world and others, and why does it matter?’ where we will encounter stories and texts that say something about different people being unique and valuable, making links to Christian and Jewish worldviews and the belief that God loves all people.

Music

In Music we will be matching and creating pictures/symbols to represent sound. We will also capture, sequence and change sounds to make a musical story. We will be using the song ‘Yoyo and The Little Auk’ to create sound pictures.

PE

Swimming sessions will also be taking part during the summer term as and when the weather and pool temperature are suitable. When swimming is not suitable due to the weather the PE session will develop their attacking and defending skills in the context of a range of games.

PSHE

In PSHE the children will be looking at Health and Wellbeing. In the first half term we will be discussing what it means to be healthy and why it is important. We will also look at healthy and unhealthy foods, basic hygiene routines.

In the second half term we will be recognising what makes us special, who to speak to when we are finding things tricky, different kinds of feelings and why rules keep us safe.

Homework

In Year 1 we ask you to continue to support your child’s learning by listening to your child read their Little Wandle book. We also recommend that you enjoy reading and discussing a longer, high-quality text to your child.

Warm regards,

Miss Pears and Mrs Page
