Year 6
Dear Parents and Carers,
We are excited to share with you an overview of the curriculum and learning opportunities your child will experience in Year 6 this term. This letter is designed to keep you informed and to help you support your child’s learning at home.
Our Learning This Term
English
Our English curriculum is based on high-quality books. In Summer 1, we will be focusing on fate vs free will. In Summer 2, we will be focusing on crossing borders.
● Summer 1.1: Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare – balanced argument
● Summer 2.1: The Unforgotten Coat by Frank Cottrell Boyce – own-version narrative
● Summer 2.2: Some Places More Than Others by Renee Watson – The Suitcase Project (a collection of poems)
Mathematics
Year 6 will begin the term by studying ratio and proportion, order of operations, mean average, and algebra. In the run‑up to SATs, there will be lots of revision of concepts previously taught in Year 6 and across KS2. After SATs, we will finish any remaining concepts and focus on revision, transition, and mathematical projects, taking us through to the end of the year.
Reading
Our reading curriculum involves daily whole‑class guided reading lessons based on the class reader and a range of fiction and non‑fiction texts that link to our wider curriculum. We have planned for progression, diversity, and challenge using carefully selected texts that are engaging and relevant, while also developing key comprehension, inference, and retrieval skills.
Science
In Science, children will develop their understanding of the human body, learning how it works and how it is affected by different factors such as exercise. Later in the term, we will turn our attention to physical and chemical changes, where pupils will learn how to separate mixtures using distillation and chromatography, and how to identify and compare physical and chemical changes, including rusting and combustion.
History and Geography
In History, children will be learning about migration and how it has influenced the world we live in today. We will study the British Empire and how it changed over time, as well as the Empire Windrush. In Geography, our topic will be I Am a Geographer, where pupils will investigate, plan, and carry out a fieldwork project.
Art / Design Technology
In Art, pupils will explore the theme Brave Colour. They will use a sketchbook to develop ideas about colour, light, and form, research installation artists, create and photograph a 3D model of an immersive environment, and present, discuss, and reflect on their own work and the work of others using constructive feedback.
In Design Technology, pupils will focus on Snacks, learning how foods are processed and how to make healthy, informed food choices. They will also develop practical cooking skills such as preparing ingredients and baking safely, alongside learning about food hygiene, nutrition, and the environmental impact of food production.
Physical Education
We are extremely lucky to be joined by Achieve4All for our PE sessions this term. Year 6 will have PE on Tuesdays and Fridays. Children will develop a range of skills, including coordination, agility, and ball control, through carefully planned lessons from our PE curriculum.
Computing
In Summer 1, pupils will develop their digital 3D design skills by manipulating, resizing, rotating, colouring, grouping, and combining shapes in Tinkercad to design, create, evaluate, and improve a practical 3D model inspired by real‑world buildings and objects.
In Summer 2, pupils will learn to program and use the micro:bit by exploring inputs, processes, and outputs. They will apply selection, variables, sensors, and program flow to design, create, test, and debug projects such as a fortune teller, compass, and step counter.
PSHE (Health and Wellbeing)
This term, pupils will develop their understanding of health and wellbeing by exploring how physical activity, healthy choices, relationships, and emotional skills support a balanced, positive lifestyle.
Religious Education
Pupils will explore biblical texts about the Kingdom of God, consider different interpretations, and explain how Christian beliefs about love and service are put into practice in diverse ways. They will reflect on how these ideas relate to issues in the world today and to their own views. Pupils will also explore different beliefs about God by defining theist, atheist, and agnostic views, examining reasons for belief and non‑belief, considering how beliefs influence behaviour, and reflecting on the value and challenges of belief in God in their own lives and the lives of others.
Homework and Reading
● Homework will be set on Fridays and due on Wednesdays.
● We encourage daily reading at home, with time to discuss and enjoy books together.
