Welcome to Year 2
The focus for this term will be to raise the children’s confidence in identifying, recognising and understanding the relationship of number and solving mathematical problems. Year 2 will be looking at place value within 100, using addition and subtraction to solve problems and using different strategies to solve word problems. Alongside this we will be investigating money; looking at graphs and introducing multiplication. It is important that all children practise their number bonds to 10 and 20 and Year 2 children will need to practise their 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
Year 2 will be focusing on fiction and non-fiction texts, which will include writing a non chronological report based on the weather and a story based on ‘Stuck’. We will build upon the children’s existing skills and help them to improve their punctuation, sentence structure and handwriting. There will be weekly spelling tests and guided reading sessions for each child in both year groups so please ensure your child is reading every night and practises their spellings for the following Friday.
Year 2 The children will be looking at Everyday Materials and their properties. They will be comparing and identifying a range of materials and finding out how the shapes of solid objects made from some materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching.
Year 2 will be looking at ‘Seasons’. They will be finding out about different types of weather; observing the weather and understanding weather data from pictures, words and symbols; understanding why the weather changes and that there are different types of wind that makes that happen; understanding that there are four seasons in the UK and knowing about parts of the UK and it’s capital cities.
Year 2 will be finding out about ‘Bonfire night and the Great fire of London’. They will be learning about the gunpowder plot, why Guy Fawkes took the action he did, how Bonfire Night changed over the years and why it is still celebrated, know what happened during the Great Fire of London and understand how the fire spread so quickly.
The children will be looking at self portraits; observing and drawing shapes; researching information about artists; describing different art work; using different types of lines and light and dark tones as well as investigating colour.
We will be looking at creating and identifying healthy snacks; discussing where fruit and vegetables come from; preparing fruit and vegetables and making a healthy fruit and vegetable snack.
Year 2 ‘We are Astronauts’ The children will be learning what algorithms are; how they are implemented as programs on digital devices; and that programs execute by following precise and unambiguous instructions; create and debug simple programs; use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs. In the 2nd half of term, the children will be looking at ‘We are games testers’. They will be trying to work out how some simple Scratch games work. They will also look at free online or open source games and share their favourite games with the class; understand what algorithms are; how they are implemented as programs on digital devices; and that programs are executed by following precise and unambiguous instructions; use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs.; recognise common uses of information technology beyond school; use technology safely and respectfully, keeping personal information private.
We will be looking at different religions from around the world through stories.
We will be looking at different songs by a range of musicians, playing instruments in time to the beat and understanding how sounds can create different moods and effects and how the music makes us feel. We will also be looking at the history of music.
The children will have 2 PE sessions, one skills based and one applying the skills learnt in different activities.
Year 2 will have Forest School in the 2nd half of term. As always Forest School learning is play based and child initiated. The children are guided by their own interests and the adults present will support their needs wherever possible.
This term we will be focusing on Health and Well Being. Every child will continue to develop their social skills, learn how to get on with each other, feelings and emotions and to have respect and responsibility. This will be achieved through a variety of methods including PSHE lessons and assemblies.
In Years 1 and 2, we ask you to support your child’s learning by reading his/her book every night and would also recommend that you enjoy reading and discussing a longer, high-quality text with your child, especially if s/he is still developing reading fluency. We aim to have learned the 2, 5 and 10 times tables by the end of Year 2 and will be asking children to practise these at home. There may be the occasional extra pieces of work that we will ask the children to complete, for example, to research information for our topic/science work.
